We are excited to present our next webinar:
Advising for Future Ready Careers for ALL Students: School Counselors are Key Allies for Equity and Access to Broaden Participation in Computing
Presenter(s): Dr. Jasmine Bowers, Dr. Sanethia Thomas, Dr. Tiffanie Smith, Angela Cleveland, Christy Conley, Bryan Cox, and Lien Diaz
Description: As school counselors we daily accept the challenge to create systemic change through our comprehensive school counseling programs. But are we doing enough to create that systemic change in the world of work? We understand the importance of identifying gaps within the demographics of our schools; however, many school counselors may not realize that many jobs continue to leave out large groups of students along the lines of gender and race. Computing permeates every aspect of our society, creating a high demand for technological innovations that change how we think, connect, conduct research, build products, and more. This demand drives the economy and creates a direct impact on the job market. Even though computing jobs offer some of the highest salaries available, we’re failing to make computing education accessible to all and attract diverse talent to the discipline.
School counselors will hear directly from national and state-level advocates along with industry leaders working to close the opportunity gap and create individual and systemic change to remove barriers and create more equitable educational and career pathways to ALL careers as computer science is changing every industry.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to...
*Identify emerging career trends, and requisite skills to empower students.
*Develop specific individual counseling and advising practices to support socially equitable career exploration.
*Identify tips for talking about computer science education and careers with key stakeholders.
