With an average of 15 children being raised by grandparents or other relatives in each U.S. K–12 public school, school counselors routinely interact with these families known as kinship families or grandfamilies. Hear from experts from the Grandfamilies & Kinship Support Network to explore kinship/grandfamilies and their many strengths and challenges. Understand how to better support these families and connect them with other community resources. Learn concrete tips and strategies from to help you reach and meaningfully support kinship caregivers and the students they raise. Hear from experts who helped inform a free, practical toolkit the network created for you and other K–12 professionals. Walk away with actionable steps to help support students and their kinship caregivers in your schools.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the strengths and challenges of children and caregivers in kinship/grandfamilies
  2. Gain practical tools for reaching out to these families and addressing their unique needs
  3. Describe practical approaches about ways to engage and work effectively and respectfully with the families
