Vision for GSCA

I see GSCA as an organization that advances the impact of school counselors across the state through intentional professional development, promotion of school counseling excellence, school counseling collaboration across regions, and advocacy not only at the state level but throughout school districts in order to support success for ALL students.

Statement on Goals and Qualifications

Hello! I’m Laura Ross. I am a school counselor at Five Forks Middle School in Gwinnett County. I am running for GSCA President-Elect. I have been a member of GSCA and ASCA for the majority of my counseling career. I began my school counseling career in Jackson County before moving to Gwinnett County. I was an elementary school counselor for 8 years and am entering my 7th year as a middle school counselor. I have been a part of GSCA leadership going on 6 years. I have been the service project chair, social media editor for 2 years, and am now in my 2nd year as Metro Director on the GSCA executive board. I was named the GSCA Counselor of the Year in 2018 and the ASCA School Counselor of the Year in 2020. I look forward to bringing my leadership experiences to the position of President-Elect that include advocating for school counseling and presenting on behalf of ASCA, presenting at district, state, and national events, advocating for school counseling at the local and state levels, serving on the ASCA Diversity and Inclusion in School Counseling Committee, the Girl Talk Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Student Support Equity Team and GCPS Social/Emotional Learning Committee, as well as my consulting work with Counselors for Computing and the Dove Self-Esteem Project.

If elected, what two goals would you like to accomplish during your term?

If elected as GSCA President-Elect during my term the goals I would like to accomplish are 1) Elevating school counselor voices and impact with stakeholders across the state and 2) Increasing school counselors’ knowledge and comfortability in working from an equity, inclusion, and social justice lens.

Experience

My ability to serve will be enhanced by my time on the GSCA executive board, opportunities to advocate for school counseling, serving on district, state, and national committees with a variety of stakeholders as well as presentations with GSCA, ASCA, Reach Higher, GLSEN, Counselors for Computing and other state SCAs.

Why should GSCA members vote for you?

I am a school counselor on purpose. I believe in the positive systemic and individual impact school counselors can make. I want to support Georgia school counselors in what they need to support ALL students while also advocating for school counselor roles and leadership with stakeholders.

Vision for GSCA

My vision for GSCA is to keep our organization growing by recruiting new members. I will also continue to educate stakeholders on the role of the school counselor. Finally, I will listen to ideas from our members and create opportunities to empower them towards GSCA leadership.

Statement on Goals and Qualifications

My name is Katrina Wilson and I am running for Elementary Director of the Georgia School Counselors’ Association. I am so excited about this opportunity to be a voice for Elementary School Counselors. I have had the privilege of serving Elementary students in a school setting for the past 12 years as the counselor at Pine Street Elementary School. During my service at Pine Street, I have led my school in becoming a Recognized ASCA model program and at attaining a DOE recognition status of Emerging in the PBIS framework. In addition, I have had the honor of leading elementary school students in a community setting as a music teacher and choral director for many years. Self-esteem, Anti-Bullying, Making Friends, Kindness, Anger Management and Body Safety, are just a few of the important topics emphasized at this level. I love seeing the creativity and energy of this group of students come to life. Their innocence fuels my passion to see them learn and succeed. I have also had the pleasure of serving in GSCA for the past 12 years. I started out as a member of this great organization then moved to serving as the Region IV Director, Region III Liaison, Metro Director and currently the APEX Liaison. I would now like to continue serving the counselors of GA as the elementary director. I believe that I can be a voice for this important level of student formation that counselors play such an intricate part in developing. Above everything else, I take the most pride and humility in being a school counselor. I am a school counselor and you are a school counselor and WE are committed to protecting, supporting, and empowering students. I have seen amazing work from the counselors of this great state, in trying to accomplish meeting the academic, social emotional and career needs of our students under challenging circumstances this year. I have seen and experienced that school counselors can do virtually anything. In conclusion, I would like to represent the exceptional counselors of Georgia as the Elementary Director of the Georgia School Counselors Association. Thank you for your support.
